Questions, answered

Frequently asked.

Is Almost Fruit made of fruit?

Yes. Almost. Please see our article 'A Note on Our Ingredients' for the slightly longer answer.

Where can I buy Almost Fruit?

Our preserves are available at select grocers and specialty food shops in most regions. If you would like us to help locate the shop nearest you, write to us directly at [email protected] and we will reply within two business days, or four in unusual cases.

How long does an opened jar last?

Refrigerated and with a clean spoon, approximately four weeks. Several of our staff report, with some embarrassment, that their jars do not last nearly that long. One staff member has sampled a jar from 1994 without incident. We do not recommend this.

Are your preserves suitable for vegans?

Yes. Our preserves contain no animal-derived ingredients. They are made with sugar, fruit (where available), filtered water, pectin (or a suitable pectin substitute), citric acid, and a small, variety-specific collection of flavor and color compounds, the names of which are printed faithfully on every label.

Do you make seasonal or limited editions?

We do. Watch for occasional releases — recent favorites include Almost Quince, Almost Fig, and a small batch of Almost Plum that we intend to bring back as soon as the relevant paperwork is resolved.

Is there gluten in your preserves?

No. All varieties are naturally gluten-free, and naturally several other things as well.

Do you ship directly to consumers?

We ship within the continental United States via our partner fulfillment network. International orders are, regrettably, not available at this time, for reasons that are partly logistical and partly regulatory.

Can I use Almost Fruit for baking?

Yes, and we encourage it. Our preserves hold their structure under heat and pair particularly well with shortbreads, cobblers, and glazes. See our Recipes for specific ideas.

Why does the ingredient list have so many words on it?

We prefer to list everything that is in the jar. We think this is the honest thing to do. We acknowledge that it reads, in places, like a chemistry paper.

Is Almost Fruit a subsidiary of a larger corporation?

No. We are independently owned and operated by a small ownership group in Almond Harbor, Connecticut. Membership in the group is not publicly disclosed, for reasons of privacy.
